What is microencapsulation ?

MICROENCAPSULATION is a process by which very tiny droplets or particles of liquid or solid material are surrounded or coated with a continuous film of polymeric material.

These micro-capsules have a number of benefits such as converting liquids to solids, separating reactive compounds, providing environmental protection, improved material handling properties. Active materials are then encapsulated in micron-sized capsules of barrier polymers (gelatin, plastic, wax, ...).

Microencapsulation includes BIOENCAPSULATION which is more restricted to the entrapment of a biologically active substance (from DNA to entire cell or group of cells for example) generally to improve its performance &/or enhance its shelf life.

From this definition it is easy to understand why microencapsulation has rapidly gained interest in a wide variety of domains ...

Why microencapsulation is still an emerging sector ?

Despite the fact that microencapsulation could be found in every life- or industrial- product, its development requires the combined expertise of a lot of people from different domain of research and development [R&D]. Moreover :

  1. every microencapsulated product requires a specific process development, &
  2. the difficulty of finding the right information to build their business is a veritable obstacle preventing entrepreneurs in introducing microencapsulation technology in some of their processes.
