The first edition of PROBIOTECH, The professional workshop on PROBIOTICS & PREBIOTICS has been a veritable success.
KEY figures :
* About 120 Attendees from 24 countries including Europe (Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands...), Canada, Israel, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland & USA.
* 80% of the participants originating from industry (food-feed, cosmetic & personal care, pharmaceuticals).

PROBIOTECH 2007 has answered specific needs of any industrials aiming at developing new products (nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals especially) which include probiotics’ bacteria. A Probiotic has been defined by the ILSI Europe (International Life Sciences Institute Europe) as well as the FAO/WHO as a “viable microbial food supplement which beneficially influences the health of its host”.

AIM
PROBIOTECH2007 has provided an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the historical and current use of probiotics, their mechanisms of action and the translation of recent basic science advances into novel industrial approaches.
CONTENT
The current level of scientific evidence supporting the use of probiotics in the management of disease conditions or in maintaining well-being, will be discussed. The workshop will also address the EC regulatory status of probiotics, both as “foods” - including dietary supplements, and as “drugs”- including pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals. Finally, the third part of the workshop will be devoted to the technical approaches to challenges what the industrials face when they want to include probiotics in new products to be marketed. Microencapsulation technologies including coating has be presented as one of the best fit to answer technical challenges like protection, increase of shelf-life and control release.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Scientists including microbiologists, nutritionists and others involved in the research and development of probiotics (15%) ; regulators and policy makers (5%) ; probiotics’ manufacturers / suppliers (15%), end-users’ representatives from the food, dietary supplement, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries (65%).
